1/22-A Definate Plan, and Some Misc. Photos

It’s been a trick trying to figure out the best way to get to Rio Grande from Rio Gallegos. Finally, a plan is in place! Originally, we were hoping to take the bus from here to R. Grande, but it was a crap shoot as to whether we could get on the bus with our bikes. We wouldn’t know until we showed up at the bus station the morning we wanted to go, and if the driver would allow it. If there wasn’t room for all three bikes, but only one, then I would go and meet up with Mathias and Carmilla in R. Grande, then ride with them to Ushuaia. Alex and Markus would leave their bikes here somewhere, and take the bus to Ushuaia, meeting me, Mathias, and Carmilla. Then they would return by bus to R. Gallegos, and fly to Buenos Aires from here.

This morning, when A&M returned the rental truck, they asked the woman if it was possible to cross the border into Chile with a rental vehicle. Turns out it is possible! So, a new plan was hatched! We would rent the pickup again, leave tomorrow morning (instead of Wednesday), drive all the bikes and our gear to R. Grande, and drop off me and the bikes. Then, A&M would drive the truck back to R. Gallegos, spend the night here (it’s booked until Wednesday), return the truck Wednesday morning, and take the bus on Thursday back to R. Grande to meet up with me. It seems crazy, but it is the only guaranteed way all our bikes get to R. Grande. Then we can ride to Ushuaia together (and maybe even with Mathias and Carmilla)! The end is insight (sort of).

And now for a few miscellaneous photos.

This is how R. Gallegos handles trash collection. There are these little baskets all over. Some are pretty small, and some are bigger and with a lid. I can see why they don’t have trash cans. The wind would just blow them away. However, the ones without lids seem somewhat problematic too. When the wind is really whipping, what’s to keep the trash from blowing out? It could a safety hazard…there you are, just walking down the street, when a gust of wind picks up a bag of trash and flings it at you! Also, today I saw the garbage truck come by. Three guys picked up the bags out of the big one by our building. One bag was open, and trash was just flying out of it. They didn’t pick up the trash that had flown out. They also didn’t take the trash that was in the basket, but not in a bag.

There are two trash baskets in this photo. The one in the back tilts in behind the gate.

And for another miscellaneous photo or two…

This is “Barkley”. He lives in one of the other apartments on our floor. I don’t know what his real name is, but Barkley fits. He is very cute and energetic. Looks to be purebred piebald dachshund (he has some patches on his leg).

He comes out in the afternoons, and loves to play.

Now that we have a plan for leaving R. Gallegos, I have to pack up my stuff.
