2/3-Checking Out the Old Prison

Who knew that Ushuaia had a convict history similar to Australia? Today we thought we might do another hike, but since it rained all night, and snowed in the mountains surrounding Ushuaia, we opted for a visit to the Maritime/Prison/Art Gallery Museum.

Snow that wasn’t there yesterday. You can see it is even below the tree line. If you are in the Northern Hemisphere, you are probably thinking it’s no big deal, but remember, I am in the Southern Hemisphere (although perilously close to Antarctica). It’s the middle of summer here!

An old Cutter (and the Naval Hospital) outside the museum.

In addition to the prison museum, there are other museums.

We started in the Maritime museum wing. There were models of various ships including the Beagle.

Darwin’s time.

The prison part had various accounts of some of the convicts. The convicts built a railway along what is now Ruta 3 into the National Park for the purpose of harvesting timber for buildings in Ushuaia. It is still possible to take an old steam train into the park. We thought about doing it, but it was far better to take the car.

I wasn’t so interested in the art gallery wing, but there were several painted penguins throughout the non-prison parts of the museum.

This one was called Colors de Fin del Mundo.

Here’s some photos of the prison wings.

There were exhibits in the old cells.

This part has been left as it was.

Overall, it was an interesting glimpse into the past history of Ushuaia.
