C2C-Day 2-To Mo’s and The Coast!

This is not a group that gets going early. It’s not really a problem though. I kind of like the relaxed pace. Even went around and took a couple of photos.

I’m ready.

The creek that runs by the campground.

We pulled out just before 9:30. Right out of the gate (okay, maybe a half mile) was the first of 4 climbs that initiated the climb profile. It was also the longest climb. For a long time we were on pavement, so that made it a bit easier.

Janet

Sue

Thomas and Bob continuing up.

Overall, I thought today was much easier. Yes, there were the climbs, but no singletrack, and there were just a couple of sprinkles of rain.

Thomas and I stopped at a turn to wait for the others. We counted 4 loaded log trucks go by, then a big machine that we found out limbs and cuts the trees to lengths. Up on the hillside we could hear and see trees falling.

One by one trees going down.

Log truck going the direction we were going.

Unloading the big machine as another log truck waits to go by. It was entertaining while we waited for the others.

Janet arriving as the big machine heads off to work.

Once we were all back together, we started another climb. There were more log trucks going by. In all, I counted 9.
We decided to break for lunch at the top of the 2.75 mile climb.

Just sitting on the side of the road eating lunch.

Thomas discovered his phone was no longer working (he got a new phone in Newport…his old one got wet…surprise surprise!).

Bob over on his phone, and watching the corner for trucks (8 & 9 went by).

We had more down then up after that climb, but there was still some ups. We got a couple of views too.

Headed down there. We would end up going right past where that steam is.

The final long descent to the water.

Go Sue Go!!!

At the end, we popped out next to the water. From here on, it was paved all the rest of the day. We had one more climb that was not long, but rather steep.

We followed the river all the way into Newport. There was, at times, a headwind. I had the advantage with the drop bars.

Thomas on North Bay/Yaquina Bay Rd.

I ended up getting ahead, so I stopped to take a photo now and then.

Newport bridge. We would be going across there! I’ve never come to the bridge from this side.

As I came into Newport, I checked to see how far Mo’s Chowder House was. It was just .8 of a mile. Thomas caught up, then we waited for the others. Once we were back together, we headed to Mo’s. This one is the original one. I don’t recall ever eating at this one.

Three of us shared a pot of slumgullion. Delicious!

The original Mo’s!

Bellies full to the top, we still had about three miles to ride to South Beach State Park. Got these shots of the bridge.

Sly’s first visit to the Oregon Coast!

Janet heading over the bridge.

We arrived at South Beach at about 6:30. They have revamped the H/B into quite a nice place. There are about 10 of us here.

Tomorrow the guys and I head south to Ona Beach, and the official end/beginning of the C2C. Janet and Sue are taking a bus back to Corvallis. Both have met their appropriate edge, and aren’t up for the ride back. I gotta admit, I’ve been thinking about the ride back. It will be a challenge, but Bob, Thomas, and I will manage it.

First you say "This is not a group that gets going early." Then you say that "We pulled out just before 9:30." So, which one is it? ;) ;) ;)

(I'm so much not a morning person.)
