Day 3-Finally, a Day Without Rain…

Sort of…

Both Doug and I slept pretty good last night. A long day will do that to you. We still got up pretty early, and we’re on the road the earliest so far, at 7:30.

Because we’d had to buy water yesterday, we got just enough to get us to Bruceport County Park where we could get more water. We probably could have gone there yesterday, but we were pretty ready to be done, and Helen Davis park was only $5, which we ended up not paying anyway (refused to pay for a campsite that has no water, and a sani-can that got a negative 10 on my potty shack rating scale-it was beyond disgusting).

Today was all rollers. Up then down, then up and down again. Still, we made good time.

A view of the Bay.

We stopped at Nemah School/Church to take a break and have a snack.

They were set up inside for a graduation party.

Our next stop was the Willapa Wildlife Refuge. Unfortunately, everything was closed for maintenance. The restrooms weren’t even open. It was a little after 11:00, so we decided to have our lunch there. We even pulled out our chairs! While we were eating, a couple came over to talk to us. Turns out they are from Olympia! Small world! They even knew a friend of mine. Then we met another couple who live in Vancouver, where I grew up. They were nice, and asked us where we were going. Both couples were surprised when we said we were going to Yorktown, Virginia. They didn’t understand why we were going south.

Our lunch spot

Too bad the trail was closed.

Meeting and chatting with these two couples showed me that we will still meet people, even though there are two of us (soon 3). That is something I’ve been curious about.

After an hour long lunch break, we got back on the road. There was often no shoulder, but drivers were pretty good about giving us space.

We rolled into Ilwaco about 1:15 or so. We stopped at the Ilwaco Market, but it wasn’t much more than a Dollar General type store. Not hardly any produce. Doug needed a dinner. I just got some yogurt and a drink.

We were looking at the sign to Cape Disappointment State Park. My Garmin said one way, but the sign said the other. Turns out, it’s a loop. We decided to go the ocean side. Nothing like a couple of long hills in 3 miles! We pulled out at Beard’s Hollow overlook.

You can go down to the Hollow itself.

We continued to the campground. As we were checking in, I asked about shower tokens. Turns out the showers are free! It’s like we’re at an Oregon State Park!

They have a raccoon problem, but have a critter locker at the H/B site. When I opened the door, I found a big bag of trash that someone had left in there. I hauled it to a rock next to the road (the dumpsters are aways away), and went to the Park Office to tell them to pick it up. It’s still sitting there…

After showers (nice and hot this time), Doug and I went to the beach. We wanted to see the Cape Disappointment lighthouse.
Zoomed in.

See it to the left?

We also saw a bald eagle sitting up on the rock.

Also zoomed in.

We attempted to hike the trail to the Interprative Center, but it was really muddy, so we turned back.

I mean…we just took showers!

Sure Foot in action!

As for the rain, we didn’t get rained on at all during the ride today, but it has rained off and on this evening. Can’t wait to have an entire day and night without rain!!!

Tomorrow we head into Oregon, and the actual Trans Am Route!
