Today we went on the tour of the Capilla de Mármol (Cathedral of Marble). It was a 2 1/2 hour tour. We were joined by 3 Argentinians. The guide spoke only Spanish, but i got the gist of most of it.
Our adventure was on Lago Chelenko, which is not only the largest lake in Chile, but the second largest lake in South America (Lago Titicaca is the largest). Chelenko is the indigenous name. It’s also called General Carrera.
First, we motored over to Sanchez Island. On Sanchez Island there are some sunken, or partially sunken barcos.
A relic from the mining industry.
This sunken barco was made of a Chilean Cyprus which is a very durable wood, hence the reason its still there.
The story about this house was that the land and the house were given to a cardiologist who saved someone on one of the tours (???). A little tricky to get to, but hey, it was a gift.
From Sánchez, we went back across the lake to the Mármol.
It was pretty incredible. The Mármol (calcium and sedimentary rock) has been eroded by water into caves and every imaginable formation.
We went into some of the caves.
One review I read said to do the kayak because the boats didn’t get very close…uh…how much closer do you need to get?
A vein of rock that doesn’t erode as quickly.
Almost the entire coastline in this area is riddled with caves and formations of rock. The marble cliffs are pretty spectacular too.
Stay tuned for Part 2 where we visit the most famous, most photographed Mármol.
