1/4-New Pedals!

Villa O’Higgins, at this time, is very quiet. Apparently, “The Boom” is a week or so away. That makes sense because this isn’t the easiest place to get to.

Markus and I went on the quest for pan and other breakfast food this morning.

Quite colorful houses.

A couple of older buildings with the backdrop of the mountains (as always).

We finally found a panadería where we told the woman how many we wanted, she went into the house, and brought out the pan in a bag. You pay for it by weight.

Then we stopped by the mercado for some huevos y marmalade y mantequilla. Oh, and some jugo.

Caroline, who speaks excellent Spanish, arranged for doing our laundry. Laundry is also paid for by weight…3500clp per kg. Later when we got our clothes back, the charge was for almost 12kg of clothes. That was way more than we knew we had. Alex took the clothes back to the office, and asked that they be weighed again. Yeah, it was 5.5kg. Much better.

After the laundry, we went to see about doing a glacier tour on our way to Candelaria Mancilla. There is one company does the glacier tour. Maybe it goes tomorrow. Or maybe it goes on Sunday. It’s weather dependent. For that matter, the ferry straight to Candelaria Mancillo is also weather dependent. After much discussion, we decided not to attempt to do the glacier tour (there will be other glaciers we can tour in Argentina), and instead book the ferry for Saturday (weather is supposed to be good, but we won’t know for sure if the boat goes until tomorrow).

Also, Caroline had to return her bike today. I went with her to see if, by a slim chance, the guy had any clipless pedals. Believe it or not, he had a repair of Shimano clipless pedals! I bought them (50,000clp). Now Billy is happy again because his pedals match!

The place is the guy’s house. Goodbye “Dale”! You were a good bike for Caroline!

There are a few other cyclists here. Jeremy, from Vancouver, BC joined us for dinner. Caroline had met him before. There’s also Josh from Toronto. Last night at dinner, we met two Swiss guys that we saw in Tortel (but didn’t talk to them then). Some are taking the boat tomorrow (if it goes). Jeremy is taking the boat on Saturday with us (if it goes). Caroline is also taking the boat, but she’ll be hiking/bussing from now on. At least we get a couple more days together.

So, we have passed the day in Villa O’Higgins doing the usual stuff, but I got new pedals!!!

And some people herd cows down the road.

Another one of those signs.

Tomorrow we will resupply, and keep our fingers crossed that the boat goes on Saturday. Currently, it’s raining.
