1/3-WE DID IT!!!

Yes, we did it! We finished the Carratera Austral!

Before we get to all that…

The four of us set out this morning with 52kms to go to Villa O’Higgins. The rod was pretty good for a long time. At the first waterfall, Caroline stopped to get some water.

Water, straight from the mountains!

There were lots of waterfalls today.

We had some climbs, but nothing more than 2kms long. There were a few steep spots.

Along the way, about every 10kms or so, there would be a shelter like we had for lunch yesterday. There were also spots where there was a viewpoint, and there would be a couple of picnic tables. We stopped at one of these for lunch. It was in the middle of a climb, but we didn’t care.

Another photo from Markus.

Only 15.7kms to go!

Lago Cisnes. We did see a couple of swans on the lake.

Post lunch siesta.

Markus commented that way back when he was looking at the route of the Carretera, there was this part just before Villa O’Higgins where the road did this big zig zag. Well, we were finally there!

The road has to go around the lake, and cross the Rio Mayer.

Me going across the bridge at the end of the lake.

This road was so washboarded!

Through the trees.

Rio Mayer

See the sign? If you don’t want to take the ferry to Argentina, you can go over Paso Mayer. Lani and Steve did that. We’ll be taking the ferries (there are two).

At 2:30, the sign came into view. We had done it! We had ridden 1240kms (plus an extra 44 to Tortel and back) in a little over 1 1/2 months (with quite a few days off).

Woo Hoo!!! Very exciting!

Caroline and I.

The story of Villa O’Higgins.

After our celebration, we rolled into town. The woman at the Cabaña Sol y Luna where we stayed in Cochrane after Christmas, recommended a cabaña in O’Higgins. We found it, and moved in. The best thing is that we are, once again in cabaña #3! Caroline is with us in the cabaña too! Her and I will be roomies for the next 3 nights. She returns her bike tomorrow. Then she will be hiking.

It’s been a good bike!

And now for a celebratory dinner!
