Day 34-From Bike Camp to Bike Camp

We both slept in this morning…well, I did get up briefly at 5:15 and quickly got this photo of the sunrise…

Then I promptly went back to sleep!

I was awakened at 6:45 by the sun heating up my tent, even without the rain fly on it. Doug, being on the other side of the gazebo partition, remained in the shade, and for the first time on this whole trip, slept longer than I did!

Jaz, Elizabeth, and Don were long gone by the time we rolled out of our tents. Todd, was still sleeping.

We finally managed to roll out around 9:00. We just had about 26 miles or so to Twin Bridges. We planned to stop at Beaverhead Rock State Park to check it out.

There be the rock!

Flock of sand hill cranes.

This is how I knew they were sand hill cranes.

The Native Americans, as well as Lewis and Clark thought the rock looked like a beaver swimming, hence the name Beaverhead Rock. We never saw an entrance to the “State Park”. I guess the markers on the side of the road constituted the park.

We just kept on going. The road today started out with a nice wide shoulder, then it went to no shoulder at all. Strangely, there was a massive amount of truck traffic. Most were pretty good about giving us space, but some were definitely NOT good. I yelled a few choice words at those ones. Then, we had about a 12” shoulder. It’s not great, but weirdly, the cars and trucks seemed to give us more space. What’s with that???

We rolled into Twin Bridges at about 11:30. The Bill White Bike Camp here in Twin Bridges was the first Bike Camp in Montana. I had heard about this place years ago. Sadly, Bill White died about 3 years ago. The city has taken over the care of the Bike Camp. Apparently, it is not as glorious as it was when Bill was alive. Still, it’s a place to stop, camp, shower, and relax.

In order to get the code for the shower, we had to text a photo of our bikes to a woman at City Hall. Then she texted me the code.

We haven’t set up our tents yet. A thunderstorm just passed over. We’ll set up later.

We went to lunch at the Blue Anchor. Portion sizes are huge, couldn’t eat it all. Now all I want to do is take a nap!
