Day 77-Part 2-Where We Go Spelunking

Okay…technically, probably not spelunking…but we did go for a walk in a cave!

We decided to do the “Domes and Dripstone” Tour. It was a 2 hour tour with 250 stairs that took us 25 stories down underground. Sure, we could do that after riding 46 miles!

Mammoth Cave is the largest cave system in the world at over 400 miles of discovered cave.

We took a bus to the entrance of the cave.

Our guide, Ranger Aaron (Ranger Brady brought up the rear).

There were less than 30 people on the tour. Apparently, this tour can accommodate 130 people at a time. I’m glad it wasn’t that many people.

We started descending on the stairs from the moment we walked through the door. At times it was quite narrow, and we had to watch our heads. Now, for a bunch of photos.

Going down down down…

The ceiling is sandstone. It’s what keeps this part of the cave dry.

That’s my shadow (my what a big head I have!)

Getting to the Frozen Niagara

Frozen Niagara.

That’s water down there.

The tour was totally worth doing the Mammoth Cave Alternate (73 extra miles). Tomorrow, we are doing another tour in the morning, then we’ll ride a few miles. I’ll explain that in tomorrow’s post.
